ECE 335 Week 2 – Discussion 1 Picturebooks The introduction for Chapter 3 of the text discusses picturebooks and the important role this type of literature can have in helping children develop in their visual, spatial, and gestural literacies (Coats, 2013). Our ability as teachers to understand the basics of picturebook design will assist us in our choosing of books. For this post, you will create a picturebook of your own, implementing and discussing those elements addressed in Chapter 3. Go to Storybird and design a picturebook to share with your classmates. If you need assistance with how to use Storybird, it is recommended you view the Storybird Tutorial for Students. In your post, include a description of the elements of an effective picturebook design, and explain how your picturebook aligns with these elements. Include one picture and description for each of the following: a. Color b. Shape, line, and texture c. Characters and icons d. Composition and point of view In your post, be sure to include a discussion of these elements, why you feel your students would enjoy this book, and a working link to your picturebook. Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ picturebooks, and imagine you are the parent of one of the children viewing the picturebooks. Respond to at least two of your classmates and discuss what your child might come home and say about the experience in class with these books. What was your child excited about? What specific aspects of the stories made an impact on your child? Provide some feedback to the teachers about ways he/she can extend the learning that took place, even at home.
