.) In Chapter 1, Cascio discusses “Quality of Work Life (QWL) and the fact that there are really two parts: the corporate part and the worker part of QWL. He notes that in a good company they will generally merge. A. How does Cascio “in theory” define QWL. B. Describe the two parts of QWL, and how the parts merge in his definition. 2.) In Cascio’s Chapter 4, a section is called “ Making the Business Case for Diversity”, which derives from a study of a number of companies. There are 5 parts to the conclusions of the study. Identify and describe two of them. 3.) Chapter 5 of Cascio has a section which is entitled “Relationship of HR Strategy to Business Strategy”. A quote from this section is “HR strategy is a set of priorities a firm uses to align its resources policies and programs with its strategic business plan”. There is a diagrammatic pyramid in this section which demonstrates this concept. Recreate and label this pyramid: 4.) Chapter 7 in the Cascio Text has a section called “Assessment Methods in Selection”. Pfeffer’s Chapter 13 is entitled “Resumes don’t tell…(etc.)” There is an interesting and fundamental difference these two concepts. Briefly describe the difference. (You can use a double column if you with). 5.) This follows the methodology of the last question: Chapter 9 of the Cascio text has a major section which is called”Managing for Maximum Performance”. Pfeffer’s Chapter 3 is entitled “Making Companies more like Communities”. Briefly contrast the concepts in these two chapters. (You canalso use a double column if you with). 6.) Chapter 11 of Pfeffer considers George Zimmer and his pay system for Men’s Warehouse and the “paradox” of incentives. What is the paradox and how is it used at the Men’s Warehouse? 7.) Chapter 13 of Cascio describes (among other things) why employees join unions. A. Why do they? B. Does Chapter 26 of Pfeffer (“In Praise of Organized Labor”) contrast with Chapter 13 of Cascio? 8.) In one of my early lectures on sociology and dynamics of workers today, I described some of the sociological characteristics of workers. What are 2 of the characteristics I discussed? 9.) We have had some discussion and an assignment in class which relates to three related things: Labor rates, the real cost of labor for a quality product, and (from Pfeffer’s Chapter 7 and 26) how that relates to profitability. What are the dynamics of these three concepts? 10.) In my lecture on hiring, one of the concepts which I used was for a company to be able to find employees who “fit” within the organization. Identify and describe on of the criteria which allows a company to find employees who “fit” within the organization?
