Compare it to a modern soundtrack or song that evokes a similar mood. In this week’s readings, a dispute in the French royal court is described about whether Poussin or Rubens was the better painter. Take a painting by each, either from our book or a Website below, and compare them and explain which you prefer. There is another conflict between the playwright Moliere and a well-born Parisian; Louis XIV stepped in. Explain how Louis XIV used the various arts and his motives for doing so. Identify one (1) example of a modern political leader approaching the arts this way. respond The painting Cimon and Pero (Roman Charity), Peter Paul Rubens, 1630-1640 was a painting that intrigued me. When I seen this painting I first noticed that it is an older man sucking on the breast of a younger woman. The man hands was tied behind her back while the young woman was looking away. I also noticed within the painting of someone looking through a window who looked like he was the police or guard. I wanted to know more about this painting and what it meant. Upon further reading I learned that the woman in the picture was the daughter of a prisoner who was sentence to die by starvation. The guard peeking through the jail window is how they learned that the daughter was allowing her father to feed off of her to keep him alive. The drawing is amazing because it speaks volumes. Key aspects that speaks the Baroque times is this picture to evoke emotions in a dramatic way. Baroque art are sensuous, rich, emotional, and exuberance. his picture represents each of these elements. Although several versions of this event has been portrayed I feel as if this portrait of the event is more intense. It shows the father up close with his eyes closed, seeing his desperation to live. The daughter as she looks away as she does the unthinkable to save her father. The chains hanging from the wall as his hands is tied behind his back. This is a portrait that spoke volumes.
